Netflix’s 31.5% margin target now rests on a guided 26.0% fourth quarter

Netflix’s 34.6% third quarter beat its own forecast on expense timing; its 31.5% full-year margin forecast still needs a 26.0% fourth quarter, while advertising falls short of plan.

Netflix’s operating margin, the share of revenue left after paying for programming, staff and marketing, reached 34.6% in the September 2026 quarter. The company still expects 31.5% for the full year at current exchange rates; on the January exchange rates its target was set on, that is now 31.4%, and the updated forecast absorbs part of the job-cut cost. The quarter and the year fit together only if the year ends on a much weaker quarter, and that is what management now guides: an operating margin of 26.0% for the fourth quarter.

In its results the company said third-quarter operating income and margin came in ahead of its own forecast, mainly because of when expenses fell, with a small lift from revenue. Netflix describes its guidance as its actual internal forecast. The guided fall from the third quarter to the fourth is 8.6 percentage points, calculated from the reported and guided margins.

A softer fourth quarter is not new for Netflix. Its operating margin was 24.5% in the final quarter of last year and 22.2% the year before, so the guided figure would still be the best of those three fourth quarters. The step down from the third quarter is the widest since 2022, when the margin fell 12.3 points.

Some of that step is a cost the company chose. Netflix says recently announced headcount reductions take about 1.2 percentage points off its fourth-quarter margin. That is a small part of the swing. Set the job cuts aside and the step from the third quarter is 7.4 points, calculated from the reported margin and the guidance, the same as two years ago.

The other change was in advertising, the business Netflix has been building beside subscriptions. It now expects about $2.7 billion of ad revenue this year, against roughly $3 billion previously, and blames a slower rollout of some of its ad products. Co-chief executive Gregory Peters put it plainly: "we are currently a bit behind our aggressive target for the year". Subscription revenue did better than the company expected, which left its full-year revenue forecast only 0.2% below the middle of its earlier range.

That forecast also sits on revenue growth that has slowed through the year, and the company’s fourth-quarter guidance points lower again.

The cash side of the business moved too. Netflix spent $4.8 billion buying back its own shares last quarter, the most in any quarter by the company’s own account, while generating $2.9 billion of free cash flow. It also lowered its free cash flow forecast for the year to about $12.0 billion from $12.5 billion, mainly because it expects a real estate transaction to close in the fourth quarter.

The job cuts are where next year’s margin will be decided. The company says the changes let it keep investing heavily in the areas that matter most to its service, and chief financial officer Spencer Neumann declined to put a figure on what they will save in 2027.

The record: notes, full financial tables

Notes

  1. Impact 4/5 Guidance Negative

Netflix cuts its 2026 ad revenue forecast to about $2.7B from about $3B

Netflix now expects about $2.7 billion of advertising revenue in 2026, against roughly $3 billion previously, citing a slower rollout of some ad product capabilities. Subscription revenue beat the company’s expectations, so its full-year revenue forecast ended only 0.2% below the midpoint of the earlier range.

“we are currently a bit behind our aggressive target for the year”— Gregory Peters, Co-CEO
  2. Impact 3/5 Balance sheet Mixed

Netflix buys back $4.8B of stock in a quarter and trims its free cash flow forecast

Netflix repurchased 63.9 million shares for $4.8 billion in the September 2026 quarter, its largest quarter of buybacks by its own account, against free cash flow of $2.9 billion. It lowered its 2026 free cash flow forecast to about $12.0 billion from $12.5 billion, mainly because a real estate transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter.

  3. Impact 3/5 One-off Mixed

Netflix job cuts take about 1.2 points off its guided fourth-quarter margin

Netflix guided a fourth-quarter operating margin of 26.0%, including a cost of about 120 basis points from recently announced headcount reductions. The same cost takes about 30 basis points off the 2026 margin, which the company still guides at 31.5%. It says the changes let it keep investing in the areas with most impact on its service.
