Swiggy's operating loss widens in the first quarter of its cash-breakeven window
After five quarters of narrowing, Swiggy's consolidated operating loss grew to ₹772 crore as it put part of its quick-commerce margin gain back into growth, halfway through the two quarters it gave itself to break even on cash.

Swiggy, which runs a food-delivery app and the Instamart quick-commerce service, reported a consolidated operating loss of ₹772 crore for the September 2026 quarter, up from ₹651 crore the quarter before. Operating loss here is the group's result before depreciation, interest and other income. As a share of sales it went from -9.6% to -10.2%. The move is modest, but it runs against the direction the company's path to breakeven had depended on, and it came in the first of the two quarters in which management said it expected to break even on cash.
Measured quarter on quarter, the loss had narrowed in each of the five quarters before this one, the run that began after it peaked at ₹964 crore six quarters ago. Over that stretch the margin improved from -21.9% to -9.6%. Last quarter is the first reversal since that peak.

- Q1 FY27 -9.6%
- Q2 FY27 -10.2%
The arithmetic of the quarter is simple. Sales rose by ₹759 crore on the quarter, and the operating loss grew by ₹121 crore, both calculated from the filed results. Other income barely moved, so nothing below the operating line explains the change. Set against a year ago the business still looks better: the margin is 4.2 points higher than in the same quarter last year, by the same calculation.

Management's explanations came segment by segment. The chief financial officer, Rahul Bothra, said of food delivery: "we've added close to INR 50 crores on an absolute EBITDA for the quarter". On quick commerce he said part of the earlier margin gain had been put back into growth, and called that spending discretionary, something the company could later pull back. Nandita Sinha, who runs Instamart, put its growth for the quarter at 13.4%. Those figures are on the company's own segment basis, which is not the same measure as the consolidated operating line, so they cannot simply be netted against the group loss. What they describe is a choice: a food business adding to its earnings funding faster growth in quick commerce and in Toing, the low-price food app the company runs as a pilot in the value market, at a time when the group result went the wrong way.
That choice matters because of a dated guide. On 30 July 2026 Bothra said the company expected over the next two quarters to break even at the overall cash level, while continuing to support quick commerce. The quarter just reported is the first of those two. On the latest call the guide was neither repeated nor withdrawn; the word breakeven came up only in an analyst's question about Toing. For scale, operating cash flow was -₹2,898 crore in the year to March 2026, and shareholders' equity fell by ₹1,344 crore over the six months to 30 September, calculated from the filed balance sheets.
The guidance for the current quarter points the other way. Bothra said the company had guided quick-commerce EBITDA about 100 basis points, or one percentage point, better in the current quarter. A move to holding its own inventory in quick commerce starts midway through the quarter and is expected to take two to three quarters to complete, so it does little for the near-term figure. On Toing, he asked for another quarter or two before the company says whether the experiment has worked, and the chief executive, Sriharsha Majety, said investment there would stay range bound in the short term.
That puts the result for the quarter now under way at the centre. It closes the two-quarter window from July, it is the quarter for which the company guided that improvement in quick-commerce EBITDA, and it comes before any verdict on Toing. If the loss resumes narrowing, last quarter will read as a pause while the company bought growth; if it does not, the filed numbers will sit awkwardly beside the July cash-breakeven guidance.
