Hyundai India's margin guidance now needs a second half near 12.5%
Sales rose 18% last quarter but operating margin was only 9.5%, so holding the 11% floor of the full-year guidance needs a second half about three points better than the first.

Hyundai Motor India's results for the September 2026 quarter show a carmaker selling far more and keeping less of each sale. Sales rose 18.3% from a year earlier to ₹20,191 crore, helped by a sharp rise in domestic car sales, yet operating profit fell to ₹1,912 crore from ₹2,383 crore. Volume has largely come back after a weak start to the financial year. Whether the company meets its margin guidance for the year now depends on the second half.
The operating margin in the filed results was 9.5% last quarter, against 14.0% a year ago, and the EBITDA margin management reported was the same 9.5%. The company put the gap down mainly to materials: K. Hariharan, head of investor relations, said commodity costs had cut about four percentage points from the margin compared with a year earlier. The margin did edge up from 9.1% the quarter before, so the slide paused, but at a level well below where it stood a year ago.

In May the company guided to an EBITDA margin of 11% to 14% for the year, and in July, after a weak first quarter, it said it remained confident of landing inside that range. The first half ended at 9.3%. To finish the year at the bottom of the range, the second half needs about 12.5%, calculated from first-half sales and operating profit and assuming second-half sales equal to double last quarter's. Tarun Garg, managing director and chief executive, put the requirement at a little over 12%. In the second half of the previous financial year the company managed 10.8%.

Garg named what should close the gap. The first is a Tamil Nadu state incentive that began in the last week of September, which he said would help both remaining quarters. He also pointed to exports, which he said earn much higher margins than cars sold at home; to a September price rise and the usual one in January; to more cars through the Chennai plant once the newly launched Beyond SUV and an electric model are built there; and to the third shift at the Pune plant, which has started and spreads fixed costs over more cars.
Some of those are already in hand: the incentive is in force and price rises are the company's own decision. Others depend on markets. Hariharan expected raw-material costs this quarter to be flat or slightly lower than last quarter, which is relief only if it holds. The tone of the guidance has also changed. In July the company said it was confident of a margin inside the range; this time Garg described an effort to take further measures to reach it.
Exports show a similar shift, from a full-year figure to a half-year one. In May the company guided to export growth of 8% to 10% for the year, and in July, after exports fell by about a fifth in the first quarter, it said it was still confident of that range. Exports grew about 4% last quarter, so the first half finished below a year earlier. Garg said the worsening geopolitical situation had affected the original plan and set the export goal as double-digit growth year on year, which Hariharan placed in the second half. That is a narrower yardstick than the full-year range set in May, and it matters for margin, because exports are where the company says profit per car is highest.
So the year's margin guidance rests on a second half running above anything the company reported in the four quarters after the one a year ago; the closest was 11.2%, in the quarter that followed it.
